It seems like either Canon has a blind spot when it comes to improving their products, they simply refuse to see real issues lying right on the surface, OR their stuff is being designed by non-photographers (marketers maybe). The Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L Macro works as expected, and IS works much better than expected. The extra magnification is of course the good thing (technically a built-in extension tube), as well as all the expected improvements in AF, IS, SA, weather sealing, coatings etc. It could have easily been 72mm, which is a much more popular size, or perhaps a 58mm. Inner focusing affords a long working distance of 5.9in. Plus, the awkward 67mm filter thread size is such an annoyance. Autofocus lens for macro photography up to life-size (1x) magnification.
